Having a core that is able to fire up and relax in equal measure is fundamental for keeping us safe as we move our bodies both on and off the mat.

Whether we’re folding forward, twisting around or coming into a backbend, we need a core that’s ready to fire up and support us throughout our lives.

But this class isn’t including a range of different sit ups that we often associate with strengthening the core.

It’s focusing on the breath.

In short, every time we inhale, our core relaxes to help facilitate the in-breath.

Every time we exhale our core gently contracts to facilitate the out-breath.

Neither version of the core is more important than the other. We need both to be able to breath fully.

We’ll start the class with breath work – giving time to notice the subtle movement of the body as you breath in and out.

We’ll then continue to observe the breath as we move through the flow and practice correlating bigger movements such as forward folds, backbends and transitions with the exhale so we can benefit from the natural integration of the core for support.
